National Prosecuting Authority – Aspirant Prosecutor Training

The National Prosecuting Authority (NPA) offers a rigorous 12-month training program designed for aspirant prosecutors. To qualify, candidates must hold a completed LLB degree or equivalent foreign qualification, with accreditation from SAQA. Final-year LLB students may also apply, provided they will complete their degree before the program starts. Applicants must be currently unemployed, have no legal experience, and have not participated in any formal Practical Vocational Training for legal practitioners. This program is exclusively open to South African citizens.

Application Process: All applications must be submitted using the new Z83 form, which can be downloaded from the DPSA website. The Z83 form must be accompanied by a comprehensive CV detailing previous legal experience (Only shortlisted candidates will be required to submit certified copies of qualifications and other relevant documents inclusive of a copy of Academic Record for final year LLB students on or before the day of the interview, following communication from Human Resources).

Applicants are reminded that:

  • Applications must be sent only to the relevant Recruitment Response email addresses.
  • The application must reach the NPA on or before the closing date.
  • Incomplete applications or applications sent in any format other than the prescribed one will be disqualified.
  • Applicants will not receive an acknowledgment unless their application is shortlisted.

Requirements:

  • A completed LLB degree or equivalent foreign qualification, supported by proof of accreditation from SAQA.
  • Applicants must be currently unemployed, have no legal experience, and have not participated in any form of Practical Vocational Training for legal practitioners.
  • South African citizenship is mandatory.
  • Permanent employees of the Department of Justice and Constitutional Development (DoJ&CD) or the NPA are also eligible.

Programme Structure: The training programme includes:

  • A 12-month practical training period.
  • A formal assessment to determine competency as a prosecutor.
  • Compliance with the Code of Conduct and Policy Directives as issued by the National Director of Public Prosecutions.

Successful candidates will be required to sign a contract outlining the terms and conditions of the training. Completion of the programme may lead to permanent or contract positions as District Court Prosecutors within the NPA, depending on the availability of positions and the needs of the NPA.

  • The NPA uses an Electronic Response Handling System. Applications submitted outside the system will be treated as invalid.
  • All applications should be submitted using the new Z83 form available from 1 January 2021.
  • Successful candidates must be prepared for a security clearance process.
