The SWCM Colloquium is an annual event that brings together young professionals in the legal profession as well as those who hope to join the profession in the near future.

This year’s theme, “Activism Through Law: Bridging the Divide,” focused on how the law can be used to address systemic inequalities and promote social justice in South Africa.

The event sparked important discussions on the role of the legal profession in driving change. We are excited to share the key moments and insights from this significant gathering, which highlighted the ongoing need for activism in law.

Welcome to the SWCM 3rd Annual Colloquium Gallery

The SWCM Colloquium is an annual event that brings together young professionals in the legal profession as well as those who hope to join the profession in the near future. In 2023, the event marked the centenary commemoration of the first group of women allowed to join the legal profession in South Africa following the promulgation of the Women Legal Practitioners Act 7 of 1923. Despite the inclusion of women in the legal profession over the years, women in the profession have continued to face challenges, such as institutionalized exclusion and discrimination, sexual harassment, and bullying.

Much more work remains to be done to ensure the transformation of the profession. Part of that work includes unveiling the numerous challenges that women in the legal profession face and how these impediments hinder the development of the South African judicial system.

It was only befitting to facilitate a dialogue between women and men from all walks of the profession on the transformative tools that exist, with the main goal of accelerating the advancement of women in the legal profession and identifying additional measures needed to promote the integration of women into the profession.

We are thrilled to present this year’s installment of the colloquium, themed “Passing The Baton Amongst Women.” The chosen theme aims to illuminate the importance of women supporting each other within the legal fraternity, fostering unity in the collective effort to overcome challenges such as inequality and the insufficient representation of women in key positions within the sector.

The primary objective of this dialogue is to inspire the young legal minds attending the Colloquium by mobilizing a united front to address the challenges faced by women in the legal sector in South Africa. In doing so, we aspire to create a platform for networking, encouraging women to strategically collaborate within their respective specialties. This collaboration will not only address current challenges but also symbolically contribute to our main objective of fostering a supportive and empowered community.
