Women’s Day Colloquium Backround

SWCM NPC hosted its inaugural ‘Women’s Day Colloquium’ in August 2019, in partnership with Cliffe Dekker Hofmeyr, one of the leading full service commercial law firms in South Africa, an event which saw 100 attendees, constituting of law students from various institutions of higher learning within South Africa congregating at Cliffe Dekker Hofmeyr to experience a meaningful dialogue steered by esteemed guest speakers: Judge Kathree-Setiloane and Deborah Mathumbo. 

The intention was to host this event annually after the success of the inaugural occasion, however due to the unforeseen Covid-19 pandemic, this could not be achieved. The recent upliftment of covid-19 restrictions in South Africa has presented SWCM NPC the opportunity to host the second installment of the ‘Women’s Day Colloquium’ in August 2022.

2022 Theme and Objectives

This years’ instalment of the colloquium will be themed “Passing The Baton Amongst Women”. The theme ought to shine a light on the need for women to be patriotic towards each other within the legal fraternity in order to be united in expediting the fight against impediments such as inequality and lack of adequate women representation within strategic positions in the sector. 

 The primary objective of the dialogue is to inspire the young legal minds that will be in attendance at the SWCM NPC Women’s Day Colloquium, to mobilize a united front in combating challenges that face women today within the legal sector in South Africa. Secondary to this, the event seeks to act as a networking platform for women to strategically collaborate in their respective specialties, which would symbolically speak to main objective.
