SWCM proudly hosted its 5th Annual Colloquium, a milestone gathering that continues to create space for critical dialogue on the future of the legal profession. This year, we were honoured to welcome Advocate Pule Seleka SC, in his distinguished capacity as Chairperson of the Legal Practice Council, as one of our keynote speakers.
In his thought-provoking address, Advocate Seleka SC reflected on the standards and conduct of legal practitioners within a profession that is increasingly shaped by artificial intelligence (AI). He emphasised that while technology offers great promise, it also presents complex ethical questions that must be addressed to preserve the integrity of the legal fraternity. His message challenged both aspiring and experienced practitioners to engage critically with these shifts and to remain guided by principles of justice, fairness and accountability.
Beyond the discussion of ethics and AI, Advocate Seleka SC highlighted the transformative power of initiatives like the SWCM Colloquium, noting the importance of representation and leadership within the profession. He reflected:
“A person from a previously disadvantaged background, emerging from that dark past, champions something of this sort. It sends a message to those who are part of it, who come from it, or who come across it—that they too can.”
He noted that this year’s Colloquium stands as testament to Sinako’s name and legacy within the legal profession, a legacy that continues to inspire and reaffirm the sentiment of “we can.”
Advocate Seleka SC’s insights served as a powerful reminder that while technology may reshape practice, the human values at the heart of law remain unchanged. SWCM extends its sincere appreciation to Advocate Pule Seleka SC for his participation and for sharing his wisdom with our community.
This year’s Colloquium was proudly sponsored by McDonald’s South Africa, the Mahon Foundation led by Don Mahon SC, LexisNexis, and Purified Aqua. We were also honoured to host exhibitions by MKS Attorneys Conveyancers Notaries, Betela Attorneys Inc., and Nhlapo Sebothoma Attorneys & Notaries, whose presence and support contributed greatly to the success of this year’s gathering.
We remain deeply grateful to our partners, sponsors and exhibitors for their invaluable support in making this milestone event possible. With their collaboration, the 5th Colloquium not only advanced dialogue on law and ethics in the digital era but also strengthened the foundation of a truly inclusive legal fraternity.
