ANNUAL COLLOQUIUM

The SWCM Annual Colloquium is a pivotal event that convenes professionals in the legal field, as well as those aspiring to join the profession. This yearly gathering provides a unique platform for meaningful engagement with leaders, decision-makers, and visionaries who are actively shaping the future of the legal landscape.
The year 2023 marked a significant milestone—the centenary commemoration of the first women being allowed to join the legal profession in South Africa, following the promulgation of the Women Legal Practitioners Act 7 of 1923. While this historical step marked the beginning of women’s inclusion in the legal profession, the journey toward true equality has been fraught with challenges. Women in the profession continue to face institutionalized exclusion, discrimination, sexual harassment, and bullying, underscoring the need for ongoing transformation.

The 3rd Annual Colloquium focused on the urgent need to accelerate the advancement of women in the legal profession. The theme, “Transformation Tools to Expedite Women’s Advancement in the Legal Profession,” aimed to spark a critical dialogue between women and men from all areas of the profession. The event explored the existing transformative tools and what additional measures are necessary to ensure the full integration and advancement of women in the legal field.

The SWCM Annual Colloquium is more than just an event—it’s a movement towards a more inclusive, equitable, and transformed legal profession. Whether you are an established professional or an aspiring lawyer, the Colloquium is your opportunity to be part of the conversation that drives meaningful change.

Stay tuned for details on our upcoming Colloquium and be ready to engage with the thought leaders who are leading the charge in transforming the legal profession.

The primary objective of this dialogue is to inspire the young legal minds attending the Colloquium by mobilizing a united front to address the challenges faced by women in the legal sector in South Africa. In doing so, we aspire to create a platform for networking, encouraging women to strategically collaborate within their respective specialties. This collaboration will not only address current challenges but also symbolically contribute to our main objective of fostering a supportive and empowered community.
